Smart meter reconnection programme — mainland Greece

Enaon EDA and Italgas mandated the restoration of communication across a large installed base of MeteRSit and Sagemcom smart gas meters, with a 2029 deadline. I designed the workflow, the equipment architecture and the operational strategy, and ran the department that executed it.
Result: 15,000+ meters reconnected across mainland Greece. Operational readiness in two months. Programme closed in March 2026, three years inside the mandate.
What made it possible
Hardware. The supplied chargers took five minutes per meter, which set a hard ceiling on field throughput. I reverse-engineered the unit, designed a custom PCB and 3D-printed the enclosure, and built 56 of them. Charge time dropped to 20 seconds. Legacy tablets that had been written off were reconfigured and returned to the field instead of replaced — €38,788 in documented procurement savings across the programme.
Software. Field data entry was producing APN and IP typos that only surfaced later, as failed meters. I built MTS Data Injector and MTS Audit Tool in C#/.NET 8 WPF with AES encryption — validated entry, and real-time log auditing while the technician was still standing at the meter. Daily transfers to the EDA server ran on automated Python and Google Apps Script pipelines.
Logistics. Custom “Bike Box” transport systems for motorcycle-based technicians, designed in CAD and produced by water-jet and CNC.
Analysis. Statistical analysis on meter data to find consumption trends and detect anomalies — tampering, outages — and to direct where crews went next.
I also prepared a strategic brief for the CEO on the national NB-IoT/Nimbus programme covering approximately 570,000 meters. That was research and briefing; the deployment itself was run by the Replacements Department, not mine.
